If you’re applying for your first provisional driving licence online, please make sure you do it on the GOV.UK website.

Apply using a D1 form

Include a passport-sized photo, your ID documents and application fee.

Use the INF1D guide provided with the D1 to check that you have completed your application correctly.

Request a UK driving licence application (D1) form

You can pick one up in participating Post office branches. We stock them on behalf of the DVLA. You can also request a D1 form online.

Complete the form correctly

If you need some help filling the form out, use the guide leaflet (INF1D) that comes with it. If you still have questions, contact the DVLA.

Pay for it

The amount payable is listed on the back of the D1 form. For further information on up-to-date costs go to the GOV.UK licence fees web page. Cheques and postal orders are currently the only accepted ways to pay, please write your name and date of birth or driver number (if you know it), on the back of your payment method.

Send it all to the DVLA

You’ll find the address on the D1 form. We recommend sending it by Special Delivery, especially if valuable documents are inside.
